Former UNI Students now Leading their own Campus Ministries!

750 NAV Staff from across the U.S. gather every 4 years in Florida

This November Katie and I had the privilege of attending the Navigators' Collegiate Staff conference in Destin, Florida.  Every 4 years, all the collegiate staff in the United States gather to be refreshed in our walk with Jesus, as a group, and in our calling as an organization.  We walked away so encouraged, and not only because we got a few days in the Florida sunshine!

100 Campus leaders and directors gathered for a pre-summit trainers tune-up
As we sat in our pre-conference training with a group of other campus trainers and campus directors, I found myself flooded with gratitude for the time we got to serve and lead with the Navigators at UNI.  As I looked around the room, I saw a handful of former students in our ministry at Northern Iowa now as campus leaders, directing ministries at 4 different campuses in the Midwest besides UNI.

Left to Right (Paige and Scott Heemstra, John Anderson, Katie, Me, Grace Trent, and John Pagel) all former Navs at UNI

These are only the directors, not to mention the dozen or so other young staff who are being trained at UNI, Iowa State and beyond.  Think of the hundreds and thousands of students being impacted by these multiplying ministries, and the constant flow of students every year, who will never work for the Navigators, but are leaving our campuses, moving into neighborhoods, and workplaces all over the world with a passion to Know Christ, Make Him Known, and to Help others do the Same.

As we continue to pray for the Pacific Northwest, I am so eager to see how God will multiply our efforts at Oregon State, across the Pac NW, and to the ends of the world.   Thank you for praying along side us.

"Because you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give you peoples in exchange for you, and nations in exchange for your life."  -Isaiah 43:4

1st annual Partnership Banquet with the OSU Navigators

On June 3, 2017 the OSU Navigators hosted their first of many Partnership Banquets in Corvallis.  We were very grateful to Ted and his staff at Old World Deli downtown for the great food and facility.

Members of the community joined us for an evening of thanking God, and discussing how we pray to see God use our efforts at Oregon State to see Lifetime Laborers sent to the world through OSU.

Throughout the evening guests heard student testimonies from students like Audrey Bernard.  Some of our friends and Partners in the community were not able to join us for this great evening.  We missed you, and hope you are encouraged by reading what Audrey had to say.

Audrey: "Well, like any great story, it starts with Ultimate Frisbee. My roommate has an intense love for Frisbee so when we saw some people playing on the field, we decided to join. Immediately after walking onto the field, the staff greeted us like we were old friends. They asked for our names and actually remembered them. Someone mentioned that it was a Christian group called the Navs (which was completely lost on me what the name actually stood for). I began researching the “Navigators” and found that their values and beliefs matched mine. Their goal was to “know Christ and to make Him known.” From then on, I knew that I wanted to be a part of their mission. Afterwards, I was invited to a worship night and got connected to a Bible Study where we studied Romans. Quickly, I knew God was convicting me to put my faith into action.

I guess I should also explain my back story. I was saved when I was pretty young, and as with many things, I became bored of the whole “God thing” extremely quick. I memorized the material enough to get a pat on the head, but I never actually did anything. Even through middle and high school, I would just go through the motions because I thought that’s what all good Christian do and that God would punish me if I didn’t. Until college. After going through Romans, I knew I needed to get on fire for God. Winter term came around and a program called Timothy Team was put on. For the entire term, we learned different aspects such as a daily quiet time, realizing where our priorities are, and most importantly, how to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. They presented practical things I could do to grow in my relationship with Him. The biggest thing about Timothy Team was the witnessing. Honestly, that scared me… a lot. Talking to people about things that are uncomfortable? No thanks! However, I learned ways to initiate the conversation such as World Surveys and how to present the gospel in a way that doesn’t put them to sleep such as the bridge illustration. After each encounter, I knew that this is what God wanted me to do all along and funny thing was, I found that I actually enjoy talking to people!

The Navigators really helped me this year figure out where I was in my spiritual walk. Through Timothy Team and meeting with the staff weekly, I know that being a life-long disciple maker is what I need and want to be. One night at our worship night, we talked about the people in our lives that are Paul's, who is the disciple makers, and Timothy's, who are the disciples themselves. After Timothy Team, I knew that I wanted to be a Paul to someone. Luckily, I have already begun training a disciple myself so she, in return, can train another one. One by one, we can reach a lot of people on this campus if each one of us tries to reach someone else. Despite spending a lot of money going to college to get a degree, my true treasure is lying in Heaven. I would rather progress the kingdom of God than progress the success of myself. And that is what God, and the Navigators, have taught me this year."

Thank you so much for your encouragement and support.  We couldn't be at OSU without you!

To Know Christ and to Make Him Known,

OSU Navigators Baptized

When Katie and I first began this new movement at Oregon State, one of our prayers and goals was to establish a culture of evangelism among the Navigators at OSU.  Over the years we have learned, as many of you know, that it is much easier to establish a new culture than to change one that already exists.  So we decided to intentionally place the gospel, prayer and evangelism as pillars of the OSU NAVS right away.

A couple of practical steps we took in evangelism were to pray for the lost on campus regularly with our staff and students we were meeting.  We put time in our schedule to spend time be in the dorms and share the gospel with at least one non-believer each week.

As our culture of Evangelism has begun to be established, I have enjoyed seeing our students on campus striking up conversations with fellow students, and taking risks in sharing their faith in Jesus.  Now, as new freshmen connect with the Navigators at Oregon State, one of the things they notice is that the NAVS are a place where Christians encourage each other to be bold and share Jesus!

Matthew, Joey, Mense and Evan were baptized on June 4th
Our first OSU Navigator to put their faith in Jesus came in the spring of 2016.  Joey had met one of our staff, taken a spiritual interest survey, and got to hear the gospel illustration.  Throughout the rest of the school year the two met together to read the book of John and discuss faith in Jesus.  After putting his faith in Jesus, Joey decided to be baptized, along with three other OSU Navigators on June 4th, 2017!

7 students put their faith in Jesus for the first time this year through our ministry at OSU!

Thank you for your prayers and support, and may God reach many, many more!

We are off and running with year two as the Oregon State Navigators!  Classes started yesterday, and our small team of leaders have been hard at work meeting incoming freshmen.

OSU NAV Staff and Student Leaders preparing for Fall Kickoff
We are reminded of God's faithfulness to us when we think of how so many of you joined us in prayer and support last year at this time.  Thank you for partnering with you to see students Know Christ and Make Him Known at OSU, across the Pacific Northwest, and to the ends of the earth.

An exciting and challenging Spring

It is so much fun to think that we have now been at Oregon State for almost a full school year.  As the rain is letting up, I'd like to share with you two exciting developments and one challenge from our first year at OSU.

Katie on Campus:
As many of you know, our ministry at OSU is in a much different stage than the UNI Navigators were.  When we arrived this fall, we had a small staff team with us and zero students.  This has provided us the chance to step back, reflect on 10 year of campus ministry, and seek God on his direction for this new phase in the Pacific Northwest.
On Wednesday afternoons, Katie has been leaving me with the kids, and going onto campus with Emily, our only staff woman.  Katie and Emily have been meeting OSU women, collecting spiritual interest surveys, and sharing the good news of the Gospel.  With 4 small kids at home, this is the first time in a while that Katie has had the freedom to be on campus, personally initiating with college girls.

One of Katie's favorite meetings has been with Kinzie:
"We met Kinzie earlier this year when we were discussing our spiritual interest survey with one of her friends.  When she heard we were discussing faith, she jumped into the conversation.  We discussed what she believed about God, and what she thinks it looks like to have a relationship with Him.  We exchanged phone numbers, and Emily has now been having coffee with Kinzie every week, and looking into the Bible together."

Katie and I are so grateful for this opportunity to step into a very young ministry, re-learn some of the lessons that come from praying for students, initiating with new people, and trusting God to use our lives to point people to Jesus!

Define OSU NAVS Culture- Fall 2015

A couple years ago I came across a book called Leading from the Sandbox.  I picked up a model for helping teams develop clarity about the vision of their organization.  The idea is to provide four borders that define the activities that fit within your organization.  The hope is that, like a sandbox, these parameters provide boundaries to "play" within, while allowing members enough freedom to be creative, as long as they stay within the boundaries of the group.  The four boundaries are Mission, Central Ministry Focus, Preferred Culture, and Guiding Principles.

One of our Goals for Fall, 2015, was to define OSU NAVS culture.  Here's what we have prayerfully come up with using this model.

Mission: To Advance the Gospel of Jesus and His Kingdom into the Nations
Central Ministry Focus: Spiritual Generations of Laborers
Guiding Principles:

  • Value of God's Word- 2 Timothy 3:16
  •  Personal Relationship with Jesus- Matthew 4:19
  • Personal Responsibility for the Great Commission- Matthew 28:19-20
  • Value of the Individual- John 4:1-26
  • Power of Spiritual Multiplication- John 17:20-21
Culture
  • Fun/Welcoming- Acts 2:46-47
  • Grace/Truth- John 1:14
  • Commitment/Accountability- Proverbs 27:17
  • Faith/Risk Taking- Jeremiah 32:17
  • Simplicity/Reproducibility- 2 Timothy 2:2
What we Do:  Living and Discipling among the Lost

Thank you for praying with us as we ask God to continue to sharpen this vision, and accomplish all he wants do through us at Oregon State.

Goals 2017 at Oregon State

In Matthew 9:37, Jesus said,

"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Pray therefore that the Lord...would send laborers into the harvest."

We'll be able to really measure success of the OSU NAVS in 20 years.  If these students are still walking with Jesus, and making disciples, then we will be really excited.  We are asking God to develop Lifetime Laborers.

With this in mind, we have prayerfully come up with some goals for the 2015-2016 school year with this 20 year vision in mind.

Fall 2015

  • Define OSU NAV Culture (Check out post on 2/17)
  • Launch 3-5 Healthy Bible Studies on Campus
  • Identify 15-20 Potential future Leaders
  • Branch one study into a student led study
Winter 201617
  • Disciple 15-20 Students with a vision of Spiritual Multiplication. -2 Timothy 2:2
  • Recruit 5-10 to our new summer training program at Snow Mountain Ranch in Colorado
  • See 3-5 Students discipling one person intentionally
  • Establish a Nav Night on Campus
Spring 2016
  • Begin seeing students putting their faith in Jesus for the first time
  • Branch half of our Bible Studies into new Bible Studies
  • Each Staff person sees a 3rd generation in 1-1 discipleship
  • Recruit 10-20 student leaders for next year
Please join us in thanking God for his work in the lives of students, and that he would graciously empower the OSU NAVS to develop and send out lifetime laborers.
